A Forum to Achieve the Objectives of the Kingdom Vision 2030 Raising the Contribution of Nonprofit Sector from 1 to 5%

HE Dr. Khalid Al-Sultan, Rector of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals stressed on the importance of enhancing the role of nonprofit work, activating its contribution to social development and upgrading its services, based on the Kingdom vision 2030.

During the opening of the 7th Non-Profit Organizations’ Forum, which was launched on Saturday, 2nd December 2017 and continues for two days titled "The Role of the Non-Profit Sector in the Delivery and Development of Public Services: Health, Housing and Education". The university - was and still - is aware of the requirements of its role in the community service, and recognizes that part of this role contributed to the construction of a strong and influential nonprofit sector which participate in achieving the development objectives.

In his speech at the forum, with the participation of local and international researchers, practitioners and experts and in partnership with Abdulrehman Saleh Al Rajhi & Family Foundation, Salem Bin Mahfouz Foundation, Almajdouie Charity Association and the charitable foundation of Foundation Salem Balhamer and his family, Al Sultan said “ this participation reflects the importance and depth of the forum return and benefits, especially as it is held at a time when non-profit work is prepared to shift from the individual stage by providing assistance to the institutional stage with achieving the social development of individuals and communities.

He added that the participation reflects a response to the nonprofit sector real needs, which is witnessing a growing expansion across the world during the past two decades. Nonprofit institutions have confirmed their presence and participation locally, regionally and internationally in various development and humanitarian issues.

He stressed that King Fahd University has emphasized on the nonprofit sector developmental role through the selection of speakers and forum leaders. The forum aims at enhancing the developmental role of the nonprofit sector, which meets the Kingdom vision 2030 and aims to increase the contribution of the nonprofit sector in the GDP from less than 1% to 5%. The forum provides an opportunity to exchange information, views and experiences that makes the nonprofit sector more effective in the health, education and housing sectors.

He mentioned that the forum will cover the theoretical presentation, local harmonization and practical application. He pointed out the diversity of the forum's activities such as working papers presented by international experts, discussion sessions with representatives of the relevant governmental bodies, as well as seminars to discuss the presented concepts, experiences and their application in the local context.


The University recognizes the importance of the nonprofit work as it is the third pillar of sustainable development, complementing the roles of government and private sector. The university, with the support of Abdulrehman Saleh Al Rajhi & Family Foundation, has established the Center of Excellence in Developing Nonprofit Organizations, to develop and build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, by providing consultancy, quality programs, visions & strategies, analysis, and extrapolation of reality, which help to shape the future of the Kingdom nonprofit sector.

In collaboration with the Mohammed and Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Subaie Foundation, the University launched the “Idama” Project, which contributes to organizing the work tools, performance control and shifting from individual to institutional work.

The Kingdom charity sector is awaiting a major transformation following the adoption of an advanced rating system for charities and social committees in the Kingdom in order to strengthen the governance and provide accountability, transparency, and financial health of the programs and services.

The University and Al-Fozan Social Foundation have established an academy aimed at building the capacity of the nonprofit organizations leaders by bringing and harmonizing best practices worldwide.

Bader bin Mahfouz, the conference sponsors’ representative, said that the Kingdom wise leadership pays great attention to the nonprofit sector and within its 2030 vision, the nonprofit sector will be a supporter to the national economy.

He added that this forum focuses on the nonprofit sector role in public services, including health, education and housing. A group of international experts and national institutions participate to create ideas and activate the non-profit sector to achieve a social impact.

Bin Mahfouz said that the non-profit sector institutions are proud of their partnership with King Fahd University, represented by the Center of Excellence in Developing Non-profit Organizations, which is considered an international expert house in this field.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the forum, Dr. Sahl Abdul Jawad, said that the forum provides an opportunity to exchange information, views and experiences that makes the nonprofit sector more effective in the health, education and housing sectors.

Speakers include Shariq Siddiqui, Executive Director of The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), Sabth Khan Assistant Professor, Lutheran University of California, Tim Banel Director, Boston Third Sector Office, Mushtaq Chahabra Co-Founder and Chairman of the Citizens' Foundation and Jopi Gopalakrishnan Founder and President of the Partners for Health Global and Amitaf Fermani, founding CEO of the Education Alliance and John Nicolades , CEO of Bridge Housing Foundation.
