H.E. The Rector Inaugurates the 3rd Senior Design Expo

On Wednesday, 2nd May 2018, H.E. Dr. Khalid S. Al-Sultan, KFUPM Rector, inaugurated the 3rd Senior Design Expo. Graduation projects were presented on the campus in Building 54. The competition included 134 projects from 500 students.

Dr. Sultan reviewed all candidate projects and listened to a brief explanation from students about their projects.

Dr. Jafar Albinmousa, Chairman of the Executive Committee, said that prizes were distributed to 25 winning teams. Prizes, provided by BAE SYSTEMS and its partners, ranged from 2500 to 5000 riyals.

The competition was supervised by the Supervisory Committee, chaired by Dr. Mohammed Al-Homoud, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, and the Organizing Committee headed by Dr. Mesfer Al-Zahrani, Dean of the College of Engineering Sciences.

Dr. Albinmousa explained that the students are nominated by their academic departments and colleges, and the Executive Committee includes college representatives who communicate with the departments for the nomination of the projects.

This year, 500 students with 134 projects were nominated. All projects are evaluated in two stages, firstly through the academic section, and secondly through the expo arbitration committees. The arbitration committees examined each project and listened to a presentation by one of the students about it.

In addition to the scientific and technical content of the project, the evaluation included the model, poster, presentation and discussion.

Results were determined by calculating the scores of the two evaluation stages. The evaluation of the department is very important because the department knows more about the details of the project and because the evaluation during the competition was done in a short period, he added.

In order to ensure that prizes are distributed to a large number of departments, a maximum limit of five prizes was given to each department. However, the awards were distributed according to the quality of the projects.
