AJSE Keeps Gaining Momentum After 50 Years

In 1975, a homegrown Saudi journal began publishing research in science and engineering. Fifty years and over 10,000 papers later, the Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering (AJSE) reaches readers in over 180 countries. Its 50th anniversary this year celebrates decades of academic exchange, with publication activity continuing to grow.

Owned by KFUPM, the peer-reviewed journal took an important step toward international readership in 2011, when the university partnered with Springer Nature. Today, under Editor-in-Chief Dr. Bassam ElAli, AJSE publishes over 1,000 articles annually; its nearly 100,000 citations reflect how researchers have drawn on its published work. KFUPM authors have contributed 838 papers, the largest number from any institution.

That international presence has developed alongside improvements in the journal’s standing. AJSE’s impact factor increased from 2.9 in 2024 to 3.1 in 2025. Its rankings place it in the second quartile (Q2) in Web of Science for 2025 and the first quartile (Q1) in Scopus, at the 88th percentile.

Throughout its pages, researchers examine challenges within civil, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, alongside petroleum, computer and systems engineering, as well as computer science. Its science coverage further includes topics on chemistry, earth sciences, physics and biological sciences. This range gives researchers from all disciplines a place to publish their findings and contribute to ongoing scientific inquiry.

AJSE entered its anniversary year with an expanded publication schedule. Since January 2025, it has published 24 issues annually, doubling its previous schedule of 12. The increase gives its 50-year milestone a forward-looking character, with new research reaching readers twice a month.

For KFUPM and the journal’s authors, reviewers and editorial team, the anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate the work behind those five decades. With a fuller publishing calendar and readers around the world, AJSE begins its next chapter with plenty of work ahead.
