A Journey of Learning and Culture in Malaysia

As part of the KFUPM Explores program, a group of four students embarked on an academic and cultural journey to Malaysia. The trip was assigned by the Academic Affairs department, offering the team a chance to experience the country’s diversity, academic institutions, and industries while gaining exposure to new perspectives that enriched their learning beyond the classroom.

Planning the trip required clear teamwork. Group leader Naflah Albarrak organized accommodations, while Safana Aljughaiman handled flight bookings. Taibah Alhamood managed outreach to companies and universities, and Lujain Alem arranged local transportation and entertainment activities. The itinerary was developed collectively, ensuring balanced contributions and shared responsibility.

The group’s visits blended academic and cultural objectives. At the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, they explored cutting-edge research in oleochemicals and sustainability, witnessing how palm oil is being used to replace petroleum-based products across industries from cosmetics to biodiesel. This eye-opening experience highlighted Malaysia’s leadership in renewable resources and environmental responsibility.

Equally memorable was the warm reception the students received. As Saudi female students, their presence attracted curiosity and admiration. Many locals expressed interest in KFUPM, Saudi Arabia, and its culture, creating opportunities for meaningful exchanges.

Traveling and planning together strengthened the group’s leadership and teamwork skills. Responsibilities were divided efficiently, and leadership shifted naturally depending on the situation, giving each member the chance to lead and support the group. By the end of the journey, they had become a cohesive team that trusted one another and discovered new strengths within themselves.

Reflecting on their journey, the students emphasized that travel is about more than discovering new places. It is also about learning flexibility, communication, and self-awareness. Their advice to future KFUPM Explores teams is to prepare well but remain open to the unexpected, as unplanned moments often become the most meaningful.
