A research team led Professor Mohammed A. Gondal at IRC for Hydrogen Technologies and Carbon Mangement, KFUPM has achieved a major milestone in green hydrogen production. The project introduces an innovative method that replaces the traditional oxygen evolution reaction with methanol oxidation, significantly enhancing hydrogen generation while producing valuable byproducts like formate and formic acid without CO₂ emissions.
To support this sustainable approach, the team developed a novel bubble templating electrodeposition technique to create advanced, cost-effective electrocatalysts. These were integrated into a solar-powered electrolyzer, further improving energy efficiency and aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for clean energy.
Looking ahead, the team plans to scale up the project by linking multiple large flow cells, demonstrating the feasibility of industrial-scale green hydrogen production. Their efforts position KFUPM at the forefront of renewable energy innovation, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
