APhO 2025 Kicks Off at KFUPM

With excitement and pride, the 25th edition of the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO 2025) commenced on May 5, 2025, in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, marking a significant milestone as it takes place in Saudi Arabia for the first time. This prestigious event is co-organized by King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), the Ministry of Education, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).

Held under the inspiring theme “Together, We Generate the Energy of the Future,” the opening ceremony brought together over 240 brilliant students from 30 countries, united by a passion for physics, innovation, and international collaboration.

In his welcoming remarks, H.E. Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Sharif, Acting Secretary-General of Mawhiba, emphasized the Olympiad’s greater meaning:

“This Olympiad is more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of intelligence, love for knowledge, and the boundless potential of youth. It brings the brightest young minds from over 30 countries, all united by a shared passion for physics, new ideas, and innovation.”

The evening featured a vibrant parade of nations, showcasing the rich diversity and shared purpose of the participating countries. Guests were captivated by a powerful opening film introducing the Olympiad’s vision, followed by a cultural showcase of the host nation through traditional Saudi dance performances, reflecting the Kingdom’s deep heritage and warm hospitality.

The ceremony also included an address by Mr. Kwek Leong Chuan, President of the Asian Physics Olympiad, who reflected on APhO’s impactful journey over the past 25 editions and its role in nurturing scientific talent across Asia.

APhO 2025 will continue until May 11, with a series of rigorous theoretical and experimental exams, scientific discussions, and engaging activities that inspire the next generation of physicists.
