Breaking Barriers in Cybersecurity at the CTF

The first-ever Capture the Flag (CTF) competition at KFUPM brought together cybersecurity enthusiasts for an electrifying test of skill in cryptography, web exploitation, reverse engineering, and digital forensics. Organized by Student Affairs and led by cybersecurity lecturer Shrooq Mosaed Alshomrani, the event provided students with hands-on experience, challenging them to solve real-world security problems while fostering a competitive spirit.

The competition attracted students eager to push their limits, with teams working tirelessly to capture hidden "flags" and accumulate points. A pre-event bootcamp prepared participants with essential knowledge, setting the stage for an intense showdown. The top three teams were rewarded with financial prizes, while all participants received a three-month premium subscription to CyberTalents, further strengthening their cybersecurity skills.

Reflecting on the event, Shrooq Mosaed Alshomrani expressed her excitement about creating a space for students to explore cybersecurity beyond the classroom. She emphasized the importance of continuous learning and problem-solving, encouraging students to participate in more competitions and immerse themselves in the cybersecurity community. She envisions this competition evolving into a national and even international event, bringing together top universities and industry leaders.

KFUPM played a crucial role in supporting the initiative, providing infrastructure, funding, and promotional outreach. Its commitment to cybersecurity excellence aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, ensuring students have the resources and opportunities to excel in this rapidly growing field. The success of this inaugural event paves the way for future competitions, establishing a strong cybersecurity community. Shrooq shared, "Cybersecurity is about curiosity, resilience, and a passion for solving challenges." With such enthusiasm driving the field forward, the future looks bright for cybersecurity talent and innovation.
