This summer, 13 standout students from KFUPM’s CX Nuclear Power Engineering program embarked on a four-week academic journey that bridged two of Europe’s foremost nuclear research hubs: the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland and the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Slovenia. The outbound training program was designed to deepen students’ technical knowledge through immersive, real-world engagement in cutting-edge nuclear science.
Over the course of the program, students worked side-by-side with internationally recognized nuclear experts. Their schedule included visits to multiple nuclear power plants, both operational and decommissioned, giving them rare insight into the full lifecycle of nuclear energy systems. They also took part in hands-on experimental training at two active Nuclear research reactors, applying theoretical principles in live environments. At ETH Zurich and EPFL, students conducted radiation and thermal hydraulics experiments, expanding their applied engineering skills in leading academic settings.
Beyond the lab, the students toured advanced nuclear waste management facilities and gained exclusive access to experimental platforms at CERN, where they explored frontier scientific tools shaping the future of physics and energy research. From Switzerland to France and Slovenia, each stop offered not only technical insight but also a global perspective.
