In Memory of Former KFUPM President

The university mourns the passing of its former President, H.E. Dr. Bakr bin Abdullah Bakr, who passed away on July 29, 2026. Dr. Bakr served as President of the University from 1976 to 1995 and played a pivotal role in shaping KFUPM during its formative years and left a lasting legacy in higher education, scientific research, and institutional development.

Dr. Bakr was one of the pioneering leaders who helped shape KFUPM during its formative years. His journey with the University began in 1964 as the first Saudi faculty member and administrator to join the then College of Petroleum and Minerals. He later served as Vice Dean, Dean of the College, and, from 1976 to 1986, as President of the University, before continuing to lead King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals until 1995, following its renaming by Royal Decree.

Throughout more than three decades of service—and nearly 25 years in senior leadership—Dr. Bakr played a central role in transforming the institution from a specialized college into a comprehensive research university. Under his leadership, the University expanded from a single college into six colleges and a Graduate School, while major academic, administrative, and residential facilities were established to support its continued growth.

Believing that higher education should be closely connected to national development, Dr. Bakr championed initiatives that strengthened the University's academic and research mission. During his tenure, KFUPM established the Research Institute, launched the Cooperative Education Program, introduced Career Day, expanded English language education, and developed one of the Kingdom's earliest university information technology centers. He also supported the recruitment of distinguished international faculty and encouraged partnerships that linked research with industry and national priorities.

His vision extended beyond the campus. Under his leadership, the University participated in pioneering scientific endeavors, including NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery, Antarctic research expeditions, environmental studies following the Gulf War oil spill, and student-led aerospace projects that reflected KFUPM's growing international scientific presence.

Dr. Bakr's contributions helped lay the foundations for many of the programs, research initiatives, and academic traditions that continue to define KFUPM today. His legacy remains embedded in the University's commitment to excellence in education, research, innovation, and service to the nation.
