KFUPM Sign Rises Above Campus Ridge

From the road below, the hillside behind Building 4 draws the eye upward. The new KFUPM sign sits along the ridge, its letters set against the natural slope. The location rises 95 meters above sea level, with the highest point of the structure at 125 meters, placing it in clear view from both across the campus and surrounding area.

The sign introduces a new reference point within the landscape. Its scale aligns with hillside letter traditions associated with universities worldwide, where large initials mark a significant presence within a city. At KFUPM, the sign enters a setting where the campus already holds a visible role in Dhahran and across the region.

The work behind the new sign began with the ground itself. Crews tested the limestone terrain before construction, drilling to depths of about 15 meters to assess stability. The foundation followed, with reinforcement applied to both the ground and the base of the structure. Material selection focused on durability, with the goal of supporting a long-term, safe presence under varying conditions.

The project was no walk in the park. It introduced several challenges along the way, including limited access to the site, which required adjustments during execution. However, the coordinating team successfully overcame each obstacle as it emerged, keeping the project on track from start to finish. The sign was completed within only four months, attesting to the strenuous efforts of the team, even under demanding conditions.

Around the site, a viewer’s experience changes according to the position. From a distance, the letters appear as a single line across the ridge. From closer points on campus, the structure is best observed in relation to nearby landmarks, including the iconic KFUPM Tower. At night, lighting defines the edges of the letters and alters how the sign appears against the hillside.

Students have begun to move through these perspectives. Many have visited the site and shared images across KFUPM’s social media channels. The sign appears in a range of compositions, from wide views that include the surrounding terrain to framed shots that focus on individual letters. An internal competition invited members of the community to select the strongest image, drawing attention to how the sign reads from different angles.

The installation connects with other visual elements across campus, such as the “Dream Big & Accomplish” lettering which can be seen after entering through the main gate, as well aerial views of the KFUPM website and acronym. These features extend across different points within the campus, forming a sequence of markers that guide how the campus is read. Within this sequence, the hillside sign introduces a new vantage point. It remains fixed along the ridge, visible from multiple directions, and integrates into the wider set of campus identifiers that define KFUPM’s presence in the area.
