Student Wins First Place in Environmental Innovation

Asma Hamad Alqasir, an Industrial Engineering student from the College of Computing and Mathematics at KFUPM, earned first place in the Innovative Solutions Track of the Sadara Environmental Solutions Competition 2025, a national event focused on sustainability and environmental innovation, held in Jubail on 27 July 2025.

Her winning project, “Development of a Multifunctional Membrane for Treating Contaminated Industrial Wastewater,” introduced a scalable and advanced membrane system designed to reduce the impact of industrial wastewater pollution. The project was recognized for its scientific merit and its potential contribution to sustainable industry practices in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

A Purpose-Driven Project

Asma’s motivation stemmed from a personal commitment to solving environmental challenges, especially those involving water scarcity and pollution.

“I’ve always been passionate about finding solutions to real-world problems. This competition gave me the chance to turn that passion into something impactful,” she said.

Her participation was not without difficulties. She had to navigate tight deadlines, simplify complex scientific ideas, and gather relevant data within tight deadlines.

“With the help of structured planning, continuous research, and guidance from my mentors, I was able to overcome those challenges,” she added.

University Support and Future Goals

Asma credits KFUPM for providing vital support throughout her journey, including access to advanced labs and research tools, as well as mentoring by faculty and researchers.

Looking ahead, she plans to further develop her membrane system through collaboration with industrial partners and research labs to implement it in real-world applications.

Advice for Future Innovators

Reflecting on her experience, Asma encourages other students to pursue opportunities that challenge them and spark meaningful change.

“Believe in your ideas, start early, and don’t be afraid to seek feedback. These competitions are more than just awards. They are a chance to grow, learn, and create impact.”
