Academic Policies and Procedures

The University academic policies, procedures, and guidelines are considered as the instruments by which academic practices are documented, quality is assured, successful stories are institutionalized, and experience of the senior people is codified, transferred and communicated to novices. Well-developed policies, procedures, and guidelines make the university mission an integral part of the daily operations, set a common understanding among people about their roles and responsibilities, help eliminate mistakes and risks, and get the work done efficiently and effectively, in a timely manner. They also provide the academic leaders, faculty members, and staff with alternatives and guidelines for the recurring issues of the academic processes. Additionally, they promote continuous improvement and develop a positive attitude in the work environment.

Therefore, a solid Policy System at KFUPM needs to be established to assist in developing the University’s policies, procedures, and guidelines, and assure its implementation and review to keep it aligned with the public policies and the continuous improvement and changes within the University’s work environment. 

In this regards, the Educational Effectiveness and Efficiency Center, of the Deanship of Academic Development, has arranged a 4-day training and consultation program, conducted by Australian experts in the development of academic policies and procedures, during the period 12-15 February 2018, in Dhahran Techno Valley. The program activities were inaugurated by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and attended by many academic leaders and faculty members at KFUPM.

During the various sessions and discussions of the program, participants learned about the best international practices in the development and review of academic policies and procedures, as well as the necessary tools and resources. The program focused on understanding the basic principles of the process of developing and reviewing academic policies and procedures, and applying them through intensive practical exercises conducted by participants, with guidance from the team of experts, during the various sessions of the program.

The program also included panel discussions, conducted by the team of experts, with individuals and small groups of academic leaders and faculty members to analyze the gaps and identify opportunities for improvement towards building a comprehensive and streamlined policy system that governs the development and revision of the academic policies and procedures at KFUPM.
