Maryland, June 27, 2024, -- In an unprecedented achievement, a student team from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) has secured first place in the prestigious Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS 2024) competition held in Maryland, USA. Triumphing over nearly 70 university teams from across the globe, this victory highlights the exceptional talent and dedication of KFUPM's students. This remarkable success follows significant improvements from previous years, where the team ranked 11th in 2022 and 20th in 2023.
The SUAS competition is designed to inspire and cultivate interest in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technologies and careers. Participants are challenged to design, construct, program, and demonstrate drones capable of autonomous flight, navigation, and performing various tasks using advanced onboard sensors.
This victory underscores KFUPM's unwavering commitment to nurturing a comprehensive student development culture. President of KFUPM Dr. Muhammad Al-Saggaf, expressed immense pride in the students' achievement. He emphasized that this success is a testament to the continuous support from Saudi leadership, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
