Focus, strategy, and silence defined the scene at KFUPM on April 18, 2026, as the university hosted its first FIDE-recognized Open Chess Championship.
Held in cooperation with the Saudi University Sports Federation (SUSF) and the Saudi Chess Federation, the championship brought together nearly 200 players across the men’s and women’s divisions in an atmosphere charged with focus and spirited competition. The tournament was conducted across two four-hour slots, with the women’s division taking place in the morning, followed by the men’s contest in the afternoon. Cheers from peer competitors echoed in the background as the momentum built, making for a full day of high-level play.
While the opening ceremony unfolded, flags from around the world were displayed proudly, recognizing all participants and their represented countries. The men’s competition drew 128 players from 17 countries, while the women’s division saw the participation of 56 contestants from 7 countries.
In the men’s category, Algerian player Haddouche Mohamed claimed the title with an outstanding score of 8.5/9. Asoque Romelio from the Philippines secured the second place, followed by Egyptian competitor Hamid Mohamed who came in third. The women’s category was equally impressive, with Egyptian player Alaa Gamal landing a clean sweep and ranking first in the tournament. South African Jesse February finished second while Indian Priyadarshini placed third. All winners received cash prizes ranging between 3,000 and 5,000 SAR, in addition to trophies and medals presented by Dr. Mohammed Hamdan, Chairman of KFUPM’s Physical Education Department, alongside honorary guest, SUSF Assistant President, Ali Al-Manea.
The chess championship reiterates KFUPM’s continued efforts to engage the community in professional sports while encouraging international exchange. It further attests to the well-rounded student experience at the university, aiming to support ambitious pursuits both academically and personally.
