Young Researchers Shine at the Inbound Summer Research Program

After six weeks of intensive research, mentorship, and discovery, the third edition of KFUPM’s Inbound Summer Research Program concluded with a Research Expo, where participants presented the outcomes of their projects to faculty members, researchers, and guests. The event held on August 4, 2026, marked the culmination of an immersive research experience designed to introduce talented students to the process of scientific inquiry in a world-class university environment.

Open to non-KFUPM undergraduate and high school students, this year’s program brought together 56 participants from 18 countries, creating a diverse community of aspiring researchers united by curiosity and a shared passion for innovation.

Throughout the program, each participant worked alongside a KFUPM faculty mentor on cutting-edge research spanning artificial intelligence, energy, petroleum engineering, healthcare, and other emerging fields. By tackling real-world challenges, students gained hands-on experience while developing the technical, analytical, and critical thinking skills that underpin impactful research.

Beyond the laboratory, participants strengthened their academic foundations through a series of professional development workshops covering data-driven decision-making, scientific writing, and advanced Excel skills for research. Laboratory safety training also ensured students were equipped to conduct their work in a safe and professional research environment.

As part of KFUPM’s mission to advance knowledge and develop globally competitive talent, the Inbound Summer Research Program extends the University’s research culture beyond its campus community. By engaging outstanding students early in their academic journeys, the program reinforces KFUPM’s role in grooming future leaders capable of addressing complex global challenges through research and innovation.

The Research Expo offered participants an opportunity to communicate their findings and reflect on the progress made over six weeks of collaboration and experimentation. More than a showcase of research outcomes, it celebrated the growth of a new generation of researchers, demonstrating how early exposure to mentorship, advanced facilities, and interdisciplinary collaboration can inspire students to pursue ambitious scientific goals.
